Doc's menu
One thing that J's a total sucker for (besides Rome and I) is B-B-Q. He can win a gift certificate to a nice, expensive, high-end restaurant, but he'll be quick to trade it in for some simple, good ol' fashioned BBQ. Luckily, in the South, it's not hard to find a couple of local favorites advertising J's beloved BBQ. The best ones in Columbia are found in the most rural, least trodden, and out-of-the-way places. Like, in the sticks and in the middle of nowhere. "If you build it they will come..." (Field of Dreams reference)
Rice, hash, corn casserole, pepper vinegar BBQ
We found a barbecue joint in the middle of nowhere, quite literally. We took an exit off the highway, drove a few miles through some sort of industrial area with fields, and found ourselves at the BBQ place J's co-worker recommended. Doc's Barbeque & Southern Buffet was packed on a lazy Sunday afternoon, but we found seating quickly enough. It's actually pretty big in the inside, and could probably seat a small church congregation from the looks of it. It's also really clean, comfortable, and decorated in the colors of the local university (USC's garnet and black).
Main meat dishes:
Doc's sweet blend BBQ
Pepper vinegar BBQ
Fried chicken
Fried catfish nuggets
Chicken wings
Smoked chicken
Turkey BBQ (which is seasonal)
Sides are:
Hash Collard greens
Black-eyed peas Rice
Catfish stew Mac n' cheese
Corn casserole Potato salad
Gravy Cole slaw
Fried okra Pork skins
Fried squash Baked beans
Chocolate cobbler Niblet corn
Watermelon Green beans
Prices:
Lunch buffet: $9.12Dinner buffet: $10.09
Kid's buffet: $4.50
I tried most of the meats and a few sides, so I can't really say what's my favorite. I'm such a glutton, and it's hard for me to be picky, but everything really was good...in true Southern deep fried fashion. If you're dying to try some real finger lickin' good Southern BBQ, nothing beats a pepper vinegar BBQ---along with its tangy sauce. If you've got a cold or a stuffy nose, that'll open up your sinuses with a quickness. I also liked the collard greens with the pork neck bones---yum!

Doc's also offers live music, beer specials, and ribs at night, so it can get pretty lively in the evening. We went around 6pm, which was already crowded, so imagine how tight it'd be at night. We were talking to a couple who recommended another great BBQ place in town, so we'll definitely hit that up on J's next BBQ craving.

meretrisha...there's a bunch of stuff on the menu, but I think you'd better eat more than two plates to experience everything! ;)
juliet...me too! Hot wings with even more hot sauce is the best!
Jenn...omg, the food was just delish. We're gonna check out another local place this weekend to see how they compare with each other. I heard Memphis has some lip smackin' bbq. You should've brought some back home with you! ;)
