...and it keeps on rising
Last weekend was a scorcher. I mean it---it was so hot, I swear the rubber started melting off my flip-flops the second I went outside on the cement. I remember meeting a few Columbia natives, when we first arrived here last November, who told us that the summers here were especially hot, but I thought it couldn't be as bad as those in Florida. Well, they're not so bad, but it really felt like the temperature outside was perpetually set on "hell."
So, how hot was it? We topped Sunday off at 105 °F (41 °C) around 5pm. That's at FIVE in the afternoon. We went out briefly in the morning, but I don't recall what the temperature was then. All I remember was that it was blazing when I stepped outside in the late afternoon with J and Rome. However, even though it was ridiculously hot yesterday, it really isn't too bad with the humidity in the area. Yes, there's a bit of humidity that makes it feel like it's really 110 °F, but for some reason, I could bear it.
Why? Because it's like 5x much worse back home in Florida. Well, the humidity, at least. I used to walk with Rome in the mornings when we were home, and I'd be drenched in sweat within 2 minutes. Here, it takes a little more for me to start sweating beadlets all over the place, but I'll still sweat. It's just that I won't be sweating buckets like I do when we're home. If I could describe the heat here in Columbia, it's like the heat you feel when you open the oven and that rush or hot air blows on your face. It's not quite as bad as it is in Florida, because the relative humidity isn't so high, but it's still hot. The coastal areas in Florida tend to have higher humidity levels, and it feels like you're constantly walking around in a hot sauna.
It's supposed to be hot (again) this week, but I think we're getting some rain, so it'll be slightly cooler. A tad bit cooler, but not much. In the meantime, we're fixing to stay cool, hydrated, and indoors! July's got some killer heat here, and I'm almost dreading August.

great post!
Oh my Gosh I cant imagne heat worse then Folrida.... holy!!!
Thanks for the comments, ladies!
Natalee---LOL. Yep, Florida in mid-July is just godawful. If you like big hair and make-up, forget about Florida in the summer. That heat n' humidity will just eat it up. ;)
It is way too hot here right now, too! Is it just as hot in North Carolina? There is a good possibility that we might move to the Raleigh-Durham area in a couple of years!
oh yes i think here in our place, we had some heat wave going on for the past 5 days. it was terribly hot. gosh! :)
Andrea---my brother lives up in NC near some mountains, and he said it's always cool there. It gets hot, but not nearly as humid as South Carolina. I'm not sure about the areas near the coastal part of NC though. I hear Raleigh's a beautiful area though. I think you guys will love it there.
Jenn---Same here, although I think it's actually pretty normal for our area to get heat advisories every single day. The motto for this city is, "famously hot," and I'm starting to see how it fits the epithet. LOL.
Thanks for answering my question, Bchai! I just took a quiz on Find Your Spot dot com (it gives you a top 20 list of your best places to live in the US) and almost all of mine were in North Carolina! So that is reassuring for if we do end up there!
